Android Vibration Settings Guide | Notifications, Calls, Keyboard, and Haptics

Androidスマートフォンの設定を見直すイメージ

Android vibration settings are scattered across several places: sound settings, notification settings, keyboard settings, app-specific settings, and sometimes manufacturer-specific menus. That is why vibration can feel inconsistent even when the phone is not broken.

This guide explains how to adjust Android vibration for notifications, calls, keyboard feedback, touch haptics, alarms, and common Pixel, Galaxy, Xperia, AQUOS, OPPO, and Xiaomi menu differences. If notifications are not arriving at all, also see How to Fix Android Notifications Not Coming Through.

First Check the Sound Mode

Start with the basic sound mode before digging through app settings.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. Find the sound icon in Quick Settings.
  3. Switch between Sound, Vibrate, and Silent.
  4. Open Settings > Sound & vibration and check the vibration options there.

On many Android phones, Vibrate mode allows vibration while muting sounds. Silent mode may suppress both sound and vibration depending on the device. If vibration disappeared suddenly, this is the first place to check.

Also check Do Not Disturb. DND can block sounds, vibration, or both, and it may be enabled by schedule.

Notification Vibration

Notification vibration is controlled at both the system level and the app level. If one app vibrates and another does not, the app-specific notification channel is usually the cause.

To check the system setting:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration.
  3. Look for Vibration, Vibration & haptics, or Notification vibration.
  4. Turn notification vibration on and adjust intensity if your device offers a slider.

To check one app:

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
  2. Select the app.
  3. Tap the notification category or channel you care about.
  4. Confirm vibration is enabled for that channel.

Android notification channels are important. A messaging app may have separate channels for messages, calls, group chats, reminders, and background alerts. You may need to open the exact channel that is silent.

Call Vibration

Call vibration is usually separate from notification vibration.

  1. Open Settings > Sound & vibration.
  2. Look for Vibrate for calls or Also vibrate for calls.
  3. Choose whether the phone should vibrate when ringing, vibrate first then ring, or never vibrate.
  4. If your device has intensity sliders, increase Ring vibration.

On dual SIM phones, call behavior can differ by SIM or carrier app. If one number vibrates and the other does not, check the SIM settings and the Phone app notification settings.

If calls do not ring either, use How to Fix Android Ringtone Not Ringing before treating it as a vibration-only issue.

Keyboard Vibration

Keyboard vibration is usually controlled inside the keyboard app, not only Android settings.

For Gboard:

  1. Open Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard.
  2. Tap Gboard.
  3. Open Preferences.
  4. Turn Haptic feedback on keypress on or off.
  5. Adjust Vibration strength on keypress if available.

For Samsung Keyboard:

  1. Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings.
  2. Tap Swipe, touch, and feedback.
  3. Open Touch feedback.
  4. Turn Vibration on or off.

If keyboard vibration is still missing, check the system haptics setting. Some devices disable keyboard vibration when system touch vibration is turned off.

Touch Feedback and System Haptics

Touch feedback covers small vibrations when you tap navigation buttons, unlock the phone, use gestures, press keys, or interact with system controls.

Look for these settings:

  • Settings > Sound & vibration > Vibration & haptics
  • Settings > Sound > Touch vibration
  • Settings > Accessibility > Vibration & haptic strength

The wording changes by manufacturer, but the idea is the same: system haptics are different from notification vibration. If you want a quieter phone, turn off touch feedback while keeping calls and important notifications vibrating.

For accessibility, some users rely on haptics as a confirmation signal. In that case, reduce intensity rather than turning every vibration off.

Alarm Vibration

Alarm vibration is often set inside the Clock app.

  1. Open the Clock app.
  2. Tap Alarm.
  3. Edit the alarm.
  4. Look for Vibrate or Vibration.
  5. Turn it on, then test the alarm.

Some manufacturer Clock apps let you choose a vibration pattern. Others only offer a simple on/off switch.

If the alarm itself fails to sound or appear, read How to Fix Android Alarm Not Ringing. Battery optimization, DND, and third-party clock apps can all affect alarm reliability.

Menu Names by Manufacturer

Device FamilyWhere to LookMain Items
PixelSettings > Sound & vibrationVibration & haptics, Vibrate for calls
GalaxySettings > Sounds and vibrationVibration intensity, System vibration, Call vibration
XperiaSettings > SoundVibration, Touch sounds, Touch vibration
AQUOSSettings > SoundVibration, Touch vibration
OPPO / XiaomiSettings > Sound & vibrationHaptics, Touch feedback, Notification vibration

These paths are examples, not fixed rules. Android versions and manufacturer skins change labels frequently. If you cannot find a setting, search inside the Settings app for vibration, haptic, or touch feedback.

When Vibration Still Does Not Work

If vibration does not work after checking the settings, isolate the symptom.

  • No vibration anywhere: test calls, notifications, keyboard feedback, alarms, and system haptics. If every type fails, suspect a system setting, software issue, or hardware fault.
  • Only one app does not vibrate: open that app's notification channel and confirm vibration is enabled.
  • Only keyboard vibration is missing: check both keyboard app settings and system haptics.
  • Only calls do not vibrate: check call vibration and Phone app notification settings.
  • Vibration stopped after an update: restart the phone and check for another system update.

Then try these steps:

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Turn vibration settings off and back on.
  3. Update the affected app.
  4. Check Settings > Apps > Special app access or battery settings if a third-party app is involved.
  5. Reset app preferences if notification channels are badly tangled.

If the phone never vibrates even during a test call or alarm, the vibration motor may be damaged. Contact the manufacturer or carrier support before factory resetting the phone.

Summary

Android vibration is not one setting. Notifications, calls, keyboard feedback, touch haptics, and alarms can each have separate controls. Start with sound mode and Do Not Disturb, then check the exact app or feature that is missing vibration.

If one category works and another does not, the phone is probably fine. The setting is just in a different place. If no vibration works anywhere, test after a restart and consider hardware support.
