There is a particular kind of old computer that makes this question difficult. It still starts. It can still open a browser. It is not obviously broken. Do not use age as the only measure

There is no universal expiration date for a PC. A laptop used for email, documents, and a handful of browser tabs can remain perfectly adequate for longer than a newer machine used for editing video, compiling code, or running meetings all day.

Instead, weigh three questions:

  • Can it still handle your actual work without constant waiting?
  • Is there one clear, affordable fault, or are several problems appearing at once?
  • Can it run a supported operating system and the software you rely on?

Faults are no longer isolated

A loose charging port is one problem. A loose charging port, unreliable Wi-Fi, a failing keyboard, and random shutdowns are a pattern. When issues move from one component to another, it is worth stepping back before authorizing the next repair.

I keep a short note of when a fault happens, what I was doing, and whether it repeats. It sounds dull, but it makes a repair conversation much more useful. It also makes the replacement decision less emotional: you can see whether you are dealing with one fixable part or a machine that is becoming unpredictable.

Battery life has stopped being practical

Battery wear is easy to normalize because it happens gradually. A laptop that only works near a wall outlet is not necessarily unusable, but it is no longer performing the job many people bought it for.

Treat a swollen battery, unusual heat, or a burning smell differently. Stop using the device and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider rather than trying to stretch its life a little further.

Repair costs do not solve the whole problem

The right comparison is not simply repair cost versus the price of a new laptop. Ask what will remain after the repair. Replacing a screen on a machine with adequate memory, a good keyboard, and a supported OS can make excellent sense. Replacing a screen on a laptop that is also painfully slow, short on storage, and unable to move to Windows 11 is harder to justify.

This is a useful rule of thumb:

  • One identifiable failing part: get a repair or upgrade quote.
  • Several faults plus performance limits: lean toward replacement.
  • A repair that leaves the PC unsuitable for your current work: reserve the money for the next machine.

Do not forget the cost of downtime. A repair that takes two weeks may require a loaner computer, extra setup work, or a delay you would not accept from a new purchase.

The operating system has become the constraint

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. It continues to run, but Microsoft no longer provides the normal free security updates, feature updates, or technical support. Microsoft recommends checking whether the current device can move to Windows 11, considering Consumer Extended Security Updates for more time, or replacing a device that cannot meet the requirements. That does not make every Windows 10 PC an automatic replacement. Start with the PC Health Check app and find out why the machine is or is not eligible. Some limits may be practical to address; an unsupported processor is a different kind of answer. Keep, repair, or replace: a practical way to decide

Keep it when the limitation is small and contained

If cleaning up storage, reducing startup apps, or updating a single component fixes the problem, keeping the PC can be the best outcome. The same goes for a machine that already runs a supported OS and still handles your work calmly.

Buying the newest processor because it exists is rarely a satisfying reason on its own. The same is true of AI features. They matter when they change something you do repeatedly, not because a product page puts them in the largest type.

Repair it when the fix is concrete

An SSD upgrade, a memory upgrade, or a battery replacement can be a very good investment when the rest of the computer is sound. This is especially true if you already like the keyboard, display, ports, and size of the machine.

Before committing, ask the repair provider for the expected turnaround as well as the price. A low quote is less helpful if it leaves you without the computer at the worst possible time.

Replace it when two or more limits overlap

I would generally favor replacement when several of these are true at the same time: recurring hardware trouble, Windows 11 ineligibility, meaningful repair cost, poor battery health, or a workload that has outgrown the hardware. None of these needs to be dramatic alone. Together they are a clearer sign than a single birthday on a spec sheet.

A change in your work is often the decisive factor. Editing photos, working with large files, running meetings while sharing a screen, or spending more time away from a desk can all make an otherwise functional computer the wrong fit.

Choose the next PC around the work you actually do

Once you decide to replace a PC, do not start with processor names. Start with the parts of your present setup that have caused frustration.

  • Documents, browsing, and streaming: prioritize a comfortable keyboard, display, and weight. Microsoft recommends 8GB of memory for a device intended to remain useful over time.
  • Multitasking and video calls: leave room for memory, check the webcam and microphone, and make sure the charging and display ports fit your desk.
  • Photo editing, video work, and development: consider memory, storage, graphics needs, and external-display support together. Microsoft notes that 16GB or more can suit high-performance work such as photo and video editing in its memory guide.
  • Frequent travel: think about the charger, battery behavior under your workload, and whether USB-C charging will simplify your bag.

Prepare before the new PC arrives

Do not erase the old computer as soon as you place an order. Make a short inventory first: files outside the obvious folders, browser sync, password manager access, software licenses, printers, VPN clients, and any accessory with its own driver.

For software with device limits, sign out or deactivate the old installation only after confirming that you can activate the new one. Keep the old PC intact until you have opened your important documents and completed a few normal work sessions on the replacement.

This preparation is not glamorous, but it is where most avoidable migration problems disappear. The decision to buy and the act of moving should be separate jobs, ideally on separate days.
