Sluggish Android, storage filling up too fast, apps crashing repeatedly — clearing cache is the first-line response to all of these. Unlike iPhone, Android exposes per-app cache controls at the OS level, making pinpoint cleanup straightforward. This guide walks through cache clearing for Android overall, major apps, and browsers, with common steps across manufacturers. For performance issues, also see when your Android feels slow, or how to free up Android storage for storage pressure.

What is Android Cache?

Cache is temporary data that apps and browsers save to retrieve quickly later. Images, JSON responses, thumbnails, fonts — content varies widely.

The Role of Cache

  • Faster app launches and page loads
  • Reduced mobile data consumption
  • Instant thumbnail display

Cache normally improves user experience. Clear it only when symptoms call for it — performance issues or storage pressure.

Compared to iPhone: Per-App Cache Menus

Android lets you go to Settings → Apps → [target app] → Storage & cache and clear cache for a single app. What requires reinstallation on iPhone is a few taps on Android.

Clearing an Individual App's Cache

The most fundamental procedure.

Standard Steps

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Apps or Apps & notifications
  3. Select the app whose cache you want to clear
  4. Tap Storage & cache
  5. Tap Clear cache

This clears only the cache inside the app. Login info and settings remain intact, so you can run it safely.

Menu Name Variations: Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi, etc.

Menu names differ slightly by manufacturer:

  • Pixel (Pure Android): Storage & cache → Clear cache
  • Samsung Galaxy: Storage → Clear cache
  • Xiaomi / Redmi: App management → [app] → Clear data → Clear cache
  • OPPO / Realme: App info → Storage usage → Clear cache
  • SHARP AQUOS: Storage → Clear cache

Menu hierarchies vary, but a Clear cache button always exists somewhere — that's the Android standard.

"Clear Cache" vs. "Clear Data"

The Storage & cache screen has another button called Clear storage (sometimes "Clear data").

ButtonWhat's removedLogin status
Clear cacheTemporary files onlyPreserved
Clear data / Clear storageSettings, logins, local data — everythingReset

Tapping "Clear data" by mistake resets the app to its initial state. Be especially careful with LINE and game apps.

Clearing Chrome Cache

Chrome has a dedicated in-app cache cleanup menu.

From Within the Chrome App

  1. Open Chrome
  2. (top right) → History
  3. Tap Clear browsing data
  4. Set Time range to All time
  5. Check Cached images and files
  6. Tap Clear data

To stay signed in while clearing cache, check only "Cached images and files" and uncheck "Cookies and site data." You won't have to re-login.

Clearing LINE Cache

LINE has its own in-app cache menu that can clear large media caches while preserving chat text.

The Steps

  1. Open LINE
  2. Home → gear icon (Settings) at top right
  3. Chats → Delete data
  4. Check Cached data
  5. Tap Delete selected data

Whether to Include Media Cache

The "Delete data" screen has multiple options:

  • Cached data: Safe to delete (read media will reload from the network)
  • Photos: Removes photo thumbnails (re-display requires network)
  • Videos: Removes video caches from chats
  • Voice messages: Removes received voice data

Never select "Delete all data" — that wipes chat history itself. The safe pattern is cache + optionally photos/videos.

YouTube, Instagram, and X (Twitter) Cache

Major SNS apps can be cleared through the standard Apps → Storage & cache flow.

YouTube

  1. Settings → Apps → YouTube
  2. Storage & cache → Clear cache

Offline-saved videos aren't deleted. Thumbnails will re-fetch via the network.

Instagram

  1. Settings → Apps → Instagram
  2. Storage & cache → Clear cache

Story, Reel, and photo caches can be cleared together.

X (formerly Twitter)

  1. Settings → Apps → X
  2. Storage & cache → Clear cache

The X app also has Data Usage Settings → Media Storage / Web Storage for in-app clearing.

Clearing Cache Across All Apps at Once

Some Android versions and manufacturers offered all-app cache cleanup in one tap.

Android 8.0 and Earlier vs. Current OS

Up to Android 7.x, Settings → Storage → Cached data would clear all app caches at once. This was removed in Android 8.0.

Per-Manufacturer One-Tap Cleanup

Some manufacturers retain a unified cache-clear function:

  • Samsung Galaxy: Settings → Device care → Storage → Clean now
  • Xiaomi / Redmi: Security app → Cleaner
  • OPPO: Phone ManagerClean Up

Pure Android (Pixel etc.) doesn't have this, so you'll need to clear major apps individually.

Built-in Storage Optimization

Beyond cache clearing, Android offers system-wide storage optimization tools.

"Storage" Settings Cleanup

  1. Settings → Storage
  2. View storage breakdown by category
  3. Remove items from candidates like "Junk files," "Unused apps," and "Duplicate files"

Download folders and leftover data from old apps like WhatsApp are often overlooked. Periodic review pays off.

Google Photos Backup and Local Copy Removal

If photos dominate your storage, the most effective lever is Google Photos' "Free up space."

  1. Open Google Photos
  2. Tap the profile icon (top right)
  3. Photos settings → Free up device space
  4. Photos already backed up to the cloud are removed from the device

Cloud copies remain, so you can re-download anything later.

When Cache Clearing Doesn't Fix It

Safe Mode for Diagnosis

If a specific app might be misbehaving, boot into Safe Mode to narrow it down.

  1. Long-press the power button
  2. Long-press "Power off" on the displayed menu
  3. Choose Reboot to safe mode
  4. Check whether behavior improves

In Safe Mode, all user-installed apps stay disabled, making it easy to find the culprit.

Reinstall the App

If cache clearing alone doesn't help, try a full reinstall.

  1. Settings → Apps → [target app] → Uninstall
  2. Reinstall from the Google Play Store
  3. Sign in again

Check beforehand whether the app uses login or account sync. Unlinked game saves will be lost.

Summary

Android, unlike iPhone, exposes OS-level per-app cache menus, making pinpoint cleanup easy.

  • Sluggish: Clear the cache of likely culprit apps individually
  • Low storage: Storage settings + Google Photos "Free up space"
  • Large apps (LINE, Chrome): In-app cache menus available too
  • Not improving: Safe Mode diagnosis + reinstall

Run cache cleanup pinpoint when symptoms appear, not on a schedule. The one thing to watch: don't tap "Clear data" when you meant "Clear cache."
